The Nosara Beaches area of the Nicoya Peninsula consists of the town of Nosara and the beaches of Playa Guiones, Playa Palelada, and Playa Nosara. These beaches are undoubtedly among the finest on the Nicoya Peninsula. Unlike Tamarindo, Flamingo, Jaco, and other areas of Costa Rica, Nosara has not been overdeveloped and has retained its natural beauty and magical feel. There is no hotel row, large condominium projects, or houses built one on top of each other.
Thirty years ago a master plan was developed and divided the land into lots which provide privacy from adjacent homes while retaining the fabulous views and proximity to the beaches. It is hard to believe there are over two hundred homes in the planned community which is a model for others to follow. A private water supply, which is the healthiest and most abundant in the country, services the properties. Electricity, telephone, internet access, satellite TV are available to the residents of Nosara. There is a large contingent of foreign homeowners in the area represented by Americans, Canadians, Swiss, German, Italian, and Dutch residences.
This extremely tranquil area is world famous for many special activities and amenities. The following is a list of the lifestyle offerings which make Nosara truly special:
- Surfing - Playa Guiones has a world class surf break on its seven kilometer pristine white sand beach with year warm waters. In March 13th 2004, it hosted the Costa Rica National Surfing Championships where surfers from all over the world competed. There are surf schools and surf shops in the Village of Guiones.
- Sport fishing - World class sport fishing is available in nearby Garza which has a bevy of well established sport fishing outfitters with modern sport fishing boats and expert English speaking captains.
- Wellness - Nosara is home to the world famous Nosara Yoga Institute where professionals train new teachers and practitioners visit to advance their skills. Massage therapy including Hawaiian Lomi Lomi and Shiatsu is also available in several locations in Nosara. Robin Williams, Goldie Hawn, and Woody Harrelson are frequent visitors to the institute.
- Kayaking - The Rio Nosara and the Rio Montana join together and empty into the sea in Nosara. Kayakers paddling up or down these rivers will experience the unspoiled mangroves teeming with monkeys, reptiles, exotic fish, flowers, and many species of birds. Experienced guides and rentals are available.
- Snorkeling and Diving - The beaches of Nosara contain many tide pools and reefs which supply both the experience and beginner divers and snorkelers the aquatic experience action they are looking for.
- Turtle Watching - the nearby beaches of Ostional provide the rare experience of observing thousands of Olive Ridley Turtles coming to shore at night to lay their eggs and return to the sea. Leatherback turtles also come ashore in smaller numbers to lay their eggs.
- Restaurants/Entertainment - there are many fine restaurants in the Nosara Beaches communities featuring local Costa Rica fare as well as fine foreign and American cuisine. A local disco bar in the village of Nosara provides lively entertainment as well as the many surfer bars and hotel bars located throughout the area.
